African countries are quickly becoming a must-see destination on many travel bucket lists. Those who have been sleeping on the beauty of the continent are finally waking up to its unspoilt beauty and raw culture.
As a South African, I thought I was familiar with the vibrancy and appeal of an African country, but it wasn’t until I started travelling that I truly discovered how enchanting Africa really is.
It was during a recent trip to islands off the coast of Mozambique that I came to appreciate the beauty of the continent. Here are 5 reasons to add Mozambique to your travel bucket list.
1. Relax and unwind
Beachside getaways are known for their picturesque views and immediate calming effect, but when your destination is a coastal Mozambican island, all you can really do is relax.
There’s no hop-on hop-off red bus to take you sightseeing or massive theme parks to keep you entertained all day, it’s just you and nature. Crack open a good book, find the perfect spot to lay down a towel and sip your cocktail. Relax, eventually watch the sun go down and let the soothing vibe of Mozambique do the rest! Talking about cocktails…
2. Sip some R&R
Mozambique is known for their signature cocktail, R&R aka Rum and Raspberry! As a bonus, these delicious drinks are also sold right there on the beach. No need to move from your perfect tanning spot, your ocean view comes with cocktails! Talking about ocean views…
3. Enjoy the picturesque beaches
White sand as far as the eye can see and crystal blue ocean, that’s just an average view when you’re spending time on Mozambique’s beaches. When we stopped over in Pomene, crabs roamed between the ocean and their homes under the sandbank and if you weren’t really paying attention you would miss the jellyfish in the ocean. Before you start worrying about safety in the water, ask a local to point out safe spots or your hotel will have designated swimming areas! Talking about swimming…
4. Pick the best time to visit Mozambique
Most vacation lovers will know that a major part of planning a vacation is picking the best time to jet-off. Nobody wants to do a beach getaway during the rainy season! Mozambique won the climate lottery because they’re one of a few destinations that experience sun almost all year round. But the most popular time to visit Mozambique is between May to October because those are the drier months.
5. Enjoy the culture
One of my favourite parts of travelling is the chance to experience a new culture. From the language to the food and art, every turn is a chance to learn something new. Leave your hotel for a day to visit a market and see what the locals get up to. This is the perfect chance to pick up a souvenir and support local businesses too.
