There’s something special about the first destination you ever travelled to – it’s almost magical. This is how I feel about Durban. From its warm ocean to its humid climate and fascinating culture – Durban will always be one of my favourite places to visit. If you ever find yourself in this city along the coast, here are budget-friendly things to do in Durban.
Enjoy a picnic in Durban Botanical Gardens
This garden spans over 15 hectares and is home to the rarest cycad collection in the world. Put on your walking shoes because there is a lot to see here. The best part is that the entrance is free, so grab a map and go!
Location: 9A John Zikhali Road, Berea, Durban.
Operating times: Monday to Sunday from 07:30 – 17:30.
Go for a splash at uShaka Marine World
You can easily spend a full day here! Take a walk through the mall and grab some lunch, then take a tour of the underwater aquarium that will leave you shocked in the best way possible. Don’t forget to catch the dolphin show and take a dive in the pool.
If you’re up for a quick thrill, uShaka Marine World also has the tallest slide in Africa, so if you have the guts, try it out. It’s higher than it looks and you’ll be pretty impressed with yourself once you do it!
Location: 1 King Shaka Avenue, Point, Durban.
Operating times: Monday to Sunday, from 09:00 – 17:00.
Go to Fun World at night
Throw it back to your best childhood memories at this amusement park. It’s not the sleekest, but it makes up for that in character. Buy tickets at the kiosk and hop onto the rides you prefer. My personal favourite is the cableway that laps the beach. At night, the view is spectacular and the lights will be something to remember.
Location: 73 OR Tambo Parade, South Beach, Durban.
Operating times: Monday to Sunday, from 09:00 – 20:00.
